History of Pollution
In the years between 1952 and 1966 the Pacific Gas and Electric Company used Chromium 6 at their Hinkley, California location. Chromium 6, which was dissolved in water and used at the plant to help cool overheating pipes, is a known carcinogen.
PG&E, as the company is commonly on the west coast, was aware of the contamination in the groundwater as early as the 1960s according to the lawsuit filed against the company in 1993.
